What is net energy?

Learn how MyEnlighten displays net energy when your system is set up for consumption monitoring

If your system is set up for consumption monitoring, MyEnlighten shows net energy measurements. Net energy is the difference between the energy produced by your solar energy system and the energy consumed by your home.

You can see a daily net energy measurement on the overview screen for any day during the lifetime of your system. On days when your system produced more energy than your home consumed, the net energy is positive.

On days when your home consumed more energy than your system produced, the net energy is negative.

The graph at the bottom of the overview screen shows net energy for 15-minute periods throughout the day. The blue bars at the top of the graph represent solar energy production and the orange bars at the bottom represent your home’s energy consumption.

The darker shaded areas of the graph indicate the net energy measurements. If more energy was produced than consumed during a 15-minute period, the darker area is on the top in the blue bar, indicating that the net energy is positive. Conversely, if more energy was consumed than produced, the darker area is on the bottom in the orange bar, indicating that the net energy is negative.

In this example, the highlighted period of 8:30 – 8:45 am has a net energy of -177 Wh. This is calculated by subtracting the amount of energy consumed during that time (300 Wh) from the amount that was produced (123 Wh).

Comparing this graph from day to day provides insight into your home’s energy consumption trends relative to when your solar energy system is producing power.
